Mt Coot-tha is my BITCH!
Since I announced to the world that I would be riding just under 500km on my bike ride from Gisborne to Rotorua with Ed, people have begun to tell me I am crazy and I won't make the distance (and the terrain). Well, I may be crazy, but I can't back out of this bike ride now.

I re-checked the elevations of the bike ride (in the link above) and noticed that we would be riding up an ascent of 400m. Wanting to be sure I could actually make the trip, I looked up the elevations for Mt Coot-tha. At 300m, it's not far off what we would be doing in NZ.

Today I got on my bike and rode out to Mt Coot-tha to see if I could actually do it. Despite my grim expectations (I was even thinking about driving to the base so I didn't have to ride as far), I managed to ride from my house, all the way to Mt Coot-tha, up the mountain, down the mountain, and back home. All up it was 42km, and my top speed down Mt Coot-tha was 58km/hr!!!

It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, however I only went for a short time. New Zealand is going to be tough, but not impossible.

BRING IT ON!!!

and you took how much gear with you on your trip up the "mountain"? :P

If Nee isn't driving along side us you will need to be carrying something as we go.

Yeah I'll be carrying the trouble of the world on my shoulders. You can take everything else.
