October 8
in brunei
This morning we left Brisbane after about 3 hours sleep. I managed to scrap together a few clothes at the last minute and put them into our shared suitcase. This is the lightest we've ever travelled, and it's feeling great so far! We only have one suitcase and one backpack between the two of us. When we travelled to NZ/Tonga at the start of the year we had 3 suitcases, 3 backpacks, a stroller and a mountain bike (and Elli too). Although we miss Elli dearly, she is in good hands. Thanks Mum and Dad (and Tammy and Dave)... (and Nana Royle).

We are safe and sound in Brunei airport waiting for just under 3 hours until our connecting flight to Bangkok. It was a long flight (7 hours), but it was more enjoyable than I anticipated. The food was very good, and most of the time I was either eating or sleeping. We received a little gift pack consisting of a towel, toothpaste and toothbrush, and a sleeping mask. The mask is awesome. I love it. So much.

Before we left Brisbane we were treated to a Muslim prayer to Allah to protect us during our flight. We were all offered refresher towelettes, but I didn't take one. I initially thought it was a spring roll wrapped in rice-paper. I would have eaten it if it was.

We sat in the middle aisle of the 767 - for those unfamiliar with the chair layout, you have 2 window seats on either side of the aircraft, and a row of 3 seats in the middle. We were assigned the 2 middle seats, Née took the aisle seat and I took the very middle. I didn't get up once during the entire flight.

Sitting next to me was a girl originally from Brisbane who is currently living and working in London. She flew back for her brothers wedding, which was on the same day as ours! Turns out she was a bit of a pisshead. Brunei is a non-alcoholic country, so they don't serve alcohol on board their flights, however you are free to bring your own. She brought along a 500ml Johnny Walker that she bought duty-free, and consumed almost all of it before we landed! Turns out she is a nervous flyer, even though she works for Easyjet in the UK, as a cabin crew member. Talk about weird, but she was very nice.

Brunei is pretty uneventful at this time of night. We are stuck in the small airport with nothing but these crappy little computer terminals to keep us occupied. Every few minutes someone talks over the intercom system and announces some kind of flight information. Every single time I listen intently as I think she's saying my last name, when really she's referring to the Royal Brunei airlines. Talk about distracting!

There is no communication barrier here as everyone speaks English very well, and all signs are in English, with some of them having Arabic translations.

Our flight has been combined with another plane flying through to Ho Chi Minh city in Vietnam. Although I'm assuming we won't be getting off the plane, at least I'll have another country to add to my list of countries visited! At this point I don't really care how late we fly into Bangkok - I'm just happy that Née hasn't ripped my eyeballs out of my sockets (yet). We were scheduled to arrive around midnight but that will probably change.

I've almost forgotten about work. I just checked my email and all I have is spam. No one is asking me to do work, or fix a problem with a website. I feel kind of unloved :) But that's ok, I'm sure within the next few weeks I will get over work completely!

Finally, we both miss you lots Elli!!! Anyway, I'm going to try and hook up a headset and give Mum and Dad a call. See ya in bustling Bangkok!

"Talk about weird, ...." imagine what she is writing on her blog about you!

Do you miss me too?

I can send you some work emails if you want.

Have fun.
